BORN:  June 27, 1918 at Portland, OR

Entered Service in the US Army Air Corps from Portland, OR

Earned the Medal of Honor during World War II For heroism on June 23, 1944 at Ploesti, Rumania

DIED:  June 23, 1944 at the age of 25

Second Lieutenant David Kingsley was a B-17 bombardier over enemy oil refineries at Ploesti, Rumania in a bombing raid on June 23, 1944. Although his aircraft was severely damaged by flak and fighters during the bomb run, he succeeded in dropping his bombs on target. The tail gunner and ball turret gunner were seriously wounded. When the pilot gave the bail-out order, Lieutenant Kingsley assisted the wounded gunners in putting on their parachute harnesses, which had been removed when they were wounded. When the tail gunner's harness could not be located, Lieutenant Kingsley unhesitatingly removed his own harness, adjusted it to the gunner, and assisted the wounded men in bailing out. The aircraft flew on for a short distance, then crashed and burned, killing Kingsley.
