A medical aidman, Private First Class Doss saved the lives of at least 75 wounded men trapped at the top of the Maeda Escarpment on Okinawa when a furious enemy attack forced all uninjured American soldiers to retreat to the base of the high cliff. Under constant attack, often from only a few yards distant, Doss stood fully exposed to slowly lower at least 75 wounded down the cliff with a rope. In the days that followed he repeatedly exposed himself to enemy fire to reach and treat wounded soldiers. On the night of May 21 he was wounded while rendering aid to other soldiers but, rather than risk the life of another aidman, remained in position and treated his own wounds. The following morning while being carried to an aid station, upon passing another more severely wounded man, PFC Doss instructed the stretcher-bearers to put him down and rescue the other wounded man instead. He then walked, still under constant enemy fire and together with another wounded soldier, reached the aid station from which he was evacuated to a hospital ship for his multiple wounds.
