Born:     May 02, 1918 at Chicago, IL

Entered Service in the US Army Air Corps from Chicago, IL

Earned the Medal of Honor during World War II For heroism April 11, 1944 at Stettin, Germany

Died:  May 10, 1994 at the age of 76

First Lieutenant Michael piloted a B-17 on a mission to Brunswick, Germany on April 11, 1944. His plane, riddled by cannon fire, began losing altitude. Numerous enemy fighters followed it down, inflicting more damage. Lieutenant Michael was seriously wounded and the aircraft's controls failed to respond until 3,000 feet had been lost. The bomb bay, loaded with incendiaries, was in flames and the emergency release failed to function. Those parachutes not already riddled were used by seven crew members. To save the remainder, Lieutenant Michael flew on until losing consciousness from his wounds. His copilot then flew the battered plane to England, whereupon Lieutenant Michael regained consciousness and landed without mishap despite seemingly hopeless odds.
