Last year, by an act of Congress, I was made an honorary veteran.  I've been given many awards in my lifetime - but to be numbered among you - the men and women I admire the most - is the greatest honor I have ever received.

This year I have received more than the usual mail from veterans - all deserving an answer.  But, looking at 95 - from the wrong direction, it takes me a little longer to answer everyone.  So, please consider this:

 

An Open Letter to
American Veterans Everywhere

The word is out that our country is looking for role models for our youth to emulate.  Well, they don't have to look very far - you're it - the constant heroes of the 20th century.

At war or in peace, what you accomplished and how you served is not merely a part of the past; it is your legacy to our great nation.  Stand tall and be proud, not only of your past, but, who you are now.  Live for today and look forward to tomorrow.

I salute each and everyone of you - every day of my life.
