BABSON, ROBERT F.
Citation:
The President of the United States takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Robert F. Babson, Private First Class, U.S. Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Company E, 145th Infantry Regiment, 37th Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces on 11 February 1945, near Malabon, Luzon, Philippine Islands. At daybreak, Company E prepared to make an assault crossing of the Dampalit River east of Malabon to seize a strategic crossroads. The enemy, 500 in number, delivered intense mortar, small arms, and automatic weapons fire on our troops as they forced the crossing, causing such heavy casualties that a withdrawal was ordered. Private Babson voluntarily assisted in the evacuation of the casualties, all of whom were exposed to hostile fire. Using native dugouts and litters, he made repeated trips under constant, intense fire from the enemy positions, wading through mud and water to load the wounded and dead on the dugouts, and then dragged and pushed them across the river through the deadly fire to safety. Working over a period of two and one half hours, Private Babson eight times crossed the treacherous river and, by his complete disregard for safety and heroic determination in the face of grave danger, saved many lives and furnished a shining example of high courage. His intrepid actions, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 37th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.

BACH, FREDERICK L., JR.
Citation:
The President of the United States takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Frederick L. Bach, Jr., First Lieutenant (Infantry), U.S. Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Company L, Infantry Regiment, 35th Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces on 10 October 1944, in France. As Lieutenant Bach was leading a platoon of Company L through the enemy-held village of Fossieux, France, his men were pinned down by enemy machine-gun fire coming from a house located on high ground in front of them. As he deployed his platoon for an attack against the position, Lieutenant Bach noticed a wounded soldier lying exposed to the intense enemy fire. Disregarding this fire, Lieutenant Bach fearlessly made his way to the injured man, rendered immediate first aid, and then carried him to shelter. Returning to his previous position in front of his platoon, Lieutenant Bach then led his men against the building where the enemy had established a strong point. He first threw a grenade through a window on the first floor, then made a room to room search of the house and determined that the enemy had taken refuge in the cellar. Directing his men to surround the house he threw grenades down the cellar ramp and was successful in securing the surrender of one enemy officer and fifteen enlisted men. Lieutenant Bach then continued the mopping up of the sector assigned to his platoon, repeatedly demonstrating his courageous and skillful leadership when the enemy threatened several times to over-run his position. First Lieutenant Bach's intrepid actions, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 35th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.

*BACLE, PETER (KIA)
Citation:
The President of the United States takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to Peter Bacle (14010206), Sergeant, U.S. Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with the 17th Armored Engineer Battalion, attached to the 2d Armored Division, in action against enemy forces on 16 November 1944, in Germany. Sergeant Bacle's platoon was assigned a mission of clearing a large and dense minefield. Upon his arrival at the area, he found approximately twenty seriously wounded infantrymen lying in the field. Others who had made previous attempts to reach the helpless men also had become casualties. Directing two medical aid men to remain at a safe distance, Sergeant Bacle, with utter disregard for his own safety, courageously probed for mines, cleared a path to two wounded soldiers and evacuated them to safety. Although the area was subjected to intermittent artillery and mortar fire, Sergeant Bacle unflinchingly resumed his hazardous task and successfully reached a third comrade who was so severely wounded that he could not be lifted. In turning the wounded man over to roll him upon a stretcher, a mine was set off which resulted in the death of both men. Sergeant Bacle's intrepid actions, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty at the cost of his life, exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 2d Armored Division, and the United States Army.

The President of the United States takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to William R. Barker, First Lieutenant (Infantry), U.S. Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Company E, 141st Infantry Division, 36th Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces on 21 - 22 January 1944, near San Angelo, Italy. First Lieutenant Barker was ordered to direct amphibious operations in an attack across the Rapido River. Impenetrable fog over the river required the boat teams to keep together to maintain contact. First Lieutenant Barker moved along the column to encourage his men over the difficult and hazardous route. Near the river heavy mortar and artillery barrages forced dispersion and two teams lost contact. As they attempted to rejoin the Company, an anti-personnel mine exploded blowing one man into an adjacent mine field and wounding several others. Immediately First Lieutenant Barker went to this group, crawled through the perilous mine field, and carried out the wounded man. Reorganizing the men, he led them to rejoin the Company. En route another mine exploded, wounding First Lieutenant Barker and several more men. Disregarding his own wounds, he directed care for the casualties and led the remainder of the group through the mine field to the Company. Concealing his wounds he reconnoitered a safe route of advance and led the company to the crossing point. Exposing himself to intense enemy fire, he attempted four times to launch the clumsy assault boats down the steep and slippery banks into the swift, treacherous current. On the fifth attempt a boat was launched, but it struck a submerged object and sank. Hearing the cries of one man being carried downstream, Lieutenant Barker dropped to the ground and extended his rifle which the soldier grabbed. Another soldier attempting to aid in the rescue also plunged into the river. Hanging over the edge, Lieutenant Barker caught this man with his free hand. Weakened from the loss of blood and exhausted, he managed by sheer stamina to hold both men while bullets struck all around. His courageous leadership inspired his company to succeed in its approach march to the river. First Lieutenant Barker's intrepid actions, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 36th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.

A few minutes after landing, Staff Sergeant Beamish then a Sergeant and squad leader, volunteered to accompany an army officer and, under fire from enemy guns, succeeded in moving inland, assaulting a gun position and pill box which was being manned by six Italian soldiers. This action resulted in the capture of the enemy and opened a landing site, specifically nullifying the fire power of the enemy on our assault and landing craft and opened a path for the advancing infantry. Staff Sergeant Beamish and the officer then proceeded up the beach in search of a better landing site and suitable position for erection of panel lights. Upon locating such a site, the officer and Staff Sergeant Beamish proceeded to erect the lights. When the lights were turned on, the staff sergeant and officer continued to advance and captured twenty-five Italian soldiers who were manning 20 millimeter and 50 caliber guns. This action opened the beach for 500 yards, affording the infantry assault waves a clean beach. The aggressiveness of Staff Sergeant Beamish, his complete disregard for personal safety, his coolness and courage under fire and in the face of a numerically superior enemy reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
