During the morning hours, Captain Bouck and his platoon were manning observation posts and in a defensive position on the right flank of the 99th Infantry Division when the position came under heavy attack by enemy forces. Knowing the importance of defending this position and delaying the enemy's advance, Captain Bouck rallied his men to repel the enemy at all costs. Repeatedly exposing himself to enemy fire, he moved from position to position encouraging his men to continue to fight. His efforts were directly responsible for his platoon inflicting heavy casualties on the enemy, repelling them during three separate attacks, and delaying their advance for 18 hours. Finally, out of ammunition and hopelessly outnumbered and surrounded by the enemy, he was overwhelmed by the enemy forces and captured at gun point. Captain Bouck's extraordinarily heroic actions against insurmountable odds contributed materially to the allied success at the Battle of the Bulge. Bourdeau (0-1297831), Captain (Infantry), [then First Lieutenant], U.S. Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Company K, 382d Infantry Regiment, 96th Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces on 18 February 1944, in the Philippine Islands. During the bitter fighting for Leyte, Philippine Islands, Company K was halted by intense small arms, machine gun, and mortar fire, and Captain Bourdeau, the Company Commander, was wounded while deploying his assault platoon preparatory to further advance. Disregarding his wounds, he led his support platoon in a flanking movement which was in turn immobilized by enemy fire. He then boldly exposed himself to the enemy fire and, after having located two machine guns firing from a pillbox, crawled to within 15 yards of their emplacement. Springing to his feet and charging the position, he destroyed the machine gun and killed two of the enemy. He then boldly crossed 15 yards of open terrain in full view of the enemy, destroyed a second machine gun, and routed six Japanese whom his men subsequently killed. Realizing he was opposed in overwhelming strength, he ordered a withdrawal, personally acting as rear guard. When a soldier was wounded during the movement, Captain Bourdeau, with no thought of personal danger, advanced 75 yards under machine gun fire, carried the man to safety, and administered first aid, and assisted him back to the company. By his indomitable fighting spirit, personal courage, and aggressive leadership, Captain Bourdeau was instrumental in relieving his company from a critical situation and, by his heroism, set an inspiring example worthy of the highest traditions of the 96th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.

The President of the United States takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Neil F. Brennan (0-1019146), First Lieutenant (Armor), U.S. Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Company B, 735th Tank Battalion, attached to the 1st Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces on 12 January 1945, in Germany. On that date, Lieutenant Brennan commanded a platoon of the 735th Tank Battalion during action to reduce a strong pocket of resistance near Wiltz, Germany. In the course of the attack, infantry elements the tank platoon supported became leaderless, and the tanks were halted by a concentration of mines. Without hesitation, Lieutenant Brennan dismounted from his tank, organized the infantry and fearlessly led an assault against the German positions, inspiring the men by his heroic leadership. Boldly in the lead, armed with a sub-machinegun, he charged the enemy in their foxholes and single-handedly destroyed a machine gun nest. Under Lieutenant Brennan's determined leadership the objective was attained. First Lieutenant Brennan's fearless courage, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 1st Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
