LACKNER, CLARENCE
Citation:
The President of the United States takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Clarence Lackner (37294956), Technical Sergeant, U.S. Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with an Infantry Company of the 18th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces on 26 November 1944, in Germany. When his company was halted by superior enemy fire, Technical Sergeant Lackner moved through intense hostile fire and located two friendly tanks. From an exposed position atop one of the tanks, he guided them toward the hostile positions and directed devastating fire upon the emplacement. As the tanks moved forward, Technical Sergeant Lackner, armed with a submachine gun, personally killed nine Germans attempting a bold maneuver. Observing a wounded soldier in direct line of hostile automatic rifle fire, Technical Sergeant Lackner dismounted from the tank, moved through the withering fire and evacuated the wounded man to safety. Technical Sergeant Lackner's intrepid actions, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 1st Infantry Division, and the United States Army.

LACY, JOSEPH R.
Citation:
The President of the United States takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Joseph R. Lacy (0-525094), First Lieutenant (Chaplain), U.S. Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving as a Chaplain with the 5th Ranger Infantry Battalion, in action against enemy forces on 6 June 1944, in France. In the invasion of France, Chaplain Lacy landed on the beach with one of the leading assault units. Numerous casualties had been inflicted by the heavy rifle, mortar, artillery and rocket fire of the enemy. With complete disregard for his own safety, he moved about the beach, continually exposed to enemy fire, and assisted wounded men from the water's edge to the comparative safety of a nearby sea wall, and at the same time inspired the men to similar disregard for the enemy fire. LAHAR, RAYMOND T.

The President of the United States takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Raymond T. Lahar, First Lieutenant (Infantry), U.S. Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Company K, 142d Infantry Regiment, 36th Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces on 9 November 1944, at Vanemont. While leading an assault force in an attack on a stubbornly defended enemy held hill, Lieutenant Lahar led his men in destroying the hostile outposts. By executing a brilliant outflanking maneuver, he took the enemy force completely by surprise and inflicted heavy casualties. When the enemy moved up reinforcements and infiltrated back into their original positions, Lieutenant Lahar, with complete disregard for his personal safety, made a lone reconnaissance of the enemy positions. Although he was severely wounded in both legs by hostile automatic weapons fire, he ordered a litter to be built and continued to command his group. Several hours later contact was reestablished with another friendly unit and the patrol was saved. First Lieutenant Lahar's inspiring leadership, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 36th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.

When demolition charges failed to destroy two bridges across the Salm River, Lieutenant Lamm led continuous attacks which held the enemy back while the bridges were prepared again. Although one bridge had been successfully destroyed the other was still usable. Realizing that this bridge must be completely destroyed, Lieutenant Lamm completely disregarding personal safety, laid the charges and detonated them in the face of heavy enemy fire. LANCE, ALDEN S.
Citation:
The President of the United States takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Alden S. Lance, Captain (Infantry), U.S. Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Company F, 135th Infantry Regiment, 34th Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces on 2 February 1944, near Cassino, Italy. Captain Lance personally led his company in a smashing attack that completely disrupted enemy hill positions. On the following morning the enemy launched a counterattack in strength. Captain Lance again unhesitatingly exposed himself to withering machine gun fire in order to direct the elements of his company. As the enemy attack increased in intensity, his company was forced to withdraw approximately two hundred yards. Determined to hold his position, Captain Lance stemmed the retreat, reorganized his units, and personally directed the activities of individual members of his company, as well as those of a platoon of another company. His courageous and inspiring leadership prompted his men to regain the lost ground and inflict heavy casualties on the enemy. During repeated German counterattacks he attended to the evacuation of the wounded, adjusted artillery fire from hazardous forward positions and courageously led his men in repelling the enemy. Captain Lance's intrepid actions, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty set an inspiring example for his men and exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States, reflecting great credit upon himself, the 34th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.

LANDON, SHIRLEY R.
Citation:
The President of the United States takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Shirley R. Landon (0-1301165), Captain (Infantry), [then First Lieutenant], U.S. Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Company G, 313th Infantry Regiment, 79th Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces on 19 December 1944, near Berg, Germany. After assuming command of his unit when the company commander became a casualty a few hours earlier, Captain Landon led an attack on the Siegfried Line. Under extremely heavy mortar, automatic-weapons, and small-arms fire which pinned down his men, he rushed back to friendly tank destroyers and led them forward to crush barbed wire barriers and enable his troops to advance against enemy pillboxes and supporting trenches. Remaining continually at the head of his company, he exhorted it in vicious hand-to-hand fighting. He moved from pillbox to pillbox firing his submachine gun and pistol through their slits. He stormed trenches with gallant disregard for his own safety. When his ammunition was expended, he picked up a weapon from the battlefield and carried on, urging his command to tremendous efforts. When a German gunner rushed from a pillbox and shot his runner and radio operator, Lieutenant Landon killed him with a grenade. Remaining in an exposed position, he repaired the radio and restored contact with his battalion commander. As the enemy withdrew, a concentration of hostile artillery and mortar fire struck the position. Following the barrage, a numerically superior force of German infantry supported by tank destroyers counterattacked. Captain Landon, although greatly handicapped by the loss of key personnel, directed a stand which repulsed the enemy with severe losses. The intrepid leadership, courage, and initiative of Lieutenant Landon and his disregard for his life so inspired his men that they were able successfully to attack a powerful enemy position, take it, and repel a determined counterthrust by superior enemy forces. LANDRY, MILTON J.
Citation:
The President of the United States takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Milton J. Landry, Major (Infantry), U.S. Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with the 2d Battalion, 141st Infantry Regiment, 36th Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces on 15 December 1943, near San Pietro Infine, Italy. Lieutenant Colonel Landry leading his battalion in the attack on the enemy-held town of San Pietro Infine, was met with strong enemy opposition, and heavy casualties, caused by intense, accurate enemy cross-fire, halted the advance. Braving a veritable hail of artillery and small arms fire, Lieutenant Colonel Landry reorganized his force. Displaying utter fearlessness, he moved around among the forward elements of his command and just after dark personally led a second assault mission. This, too, was stopped by enemy fire and minefields. During the remainder of the night he made two reconnaissance trips within the enemy lines and was wounded in the hand. He reorganized his battalion, now greatly reduced in strength, and made two other attacks, finally reaching the objective with seven officers and thirty-two enlisted men. With the coming of day-light, his small force was brought under enemy fire from all directions, but he staunchly encouraged his officers and men to hold their ground, despite the fact that he was again wounded, defeating all enemy efforts to dislodge them, until ordered to withdraw late that afternoon. By his heroic actions throughout the entire engagement Lieutenant Colonel Landry was an inspiration to his command and reflected the highest credit upon himself, the 36th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.

LAPHAM, ROBERT D.

The President of the United States takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Robert D. Lapham, Major (Infantry), U.S. Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy in action against enemy forces from 8 December 1941 to 7 May 1945, in the Philippine Islands. Major Lapham, selected to organize throughout the Philippine Islands prior to the fall of Bataan, continued his activities during the period of enemy occupation. Breaking up his unit into smaller bands in order to cover more territory, he operated in the provinces of Tarlac, Pangasinan, and Nueva Ecija collecting arms and volunteers and eliminating outlaw bands, his organization so effectively protected the civilian population from the common enemy and roving bandits, that he was able to enlist the aid of thousands of Filipinos for his forces. Establishing radio contact with General Headquarters, Southwest Pacific Area, in June 1944, he regularly submitted intelligence reports covering central Luzon. In the fall of 1944 he was able to enlarge his intelligence activities and increase his combat strength through supplies and equipment which came through the submarine service. Early in 1945, he conducted offensive operations against the enemy, cutting communication lines, ambushing troop convoys, and attacking garrisons and supply dumps. This fighting continued until the Americans had passed through the area occupied by the guerrilla troops, after which his entire force of approximately 12,000 men was made available to the Sixth Army. In the face of many hazards and extreme dangers, Major Lapham was able to organize and unify a strong guerrilla force in Luzon and by skillful planning, timely activities, and ceaseless efforts, he contributed in a material way to the success of operations in the Philippine Islands. Lee (17040250), Sergeant, U.S. Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Company A, 610th Tank Destroyer Battalion, in action against enemy forces on 7 January 1945, in the vicinity of Dahl, Luxembourg. Sergeant Lee commanded a tank destroyer supporting the defense of Dahl, Luxembourg. He knocked out two enemy tanks with direct fire from his destroyer and was wounded in the action. Refusing to be evacuated, he led his crew into action the following day against a number of enemy tanks, destroying three of them and forcing the remainder to withdraw. When a group of enemy infantrymen attacked his destroyer, this intrepid soldier dismounted and engaged them with an automatic rifle, killing several and routing the others. Then, when pinned by enemy machine gun fire he fearlessly crawled to within fifteen feet of the position and killed the crew with hand grenades. Sergeant Lee was killed by artillery fire while returning to his vehicle, but his courage and supreme devotion to duty will live on as an inspiration to his comrades. Lemke, Private, U.S. Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Company E, 133d Infantry Regiment, 34th Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces on 28 June 1944, near Castogneto, Italy. During a company advance, a leading squad was suddenly fired upon from the right rear by a strong force of Germans. In the subsequent fire fight, the enemy succeeded in cutting of the squad from the remainder of the company. The company commander prepared to send a patrol to relieve the surrounded squad, but Private Lempke sought and obtained permission to attempt the task alone. Making his was along a dry river bed and through a series of ditches, he suddenly spotted a German soldier armed with a machine pistol. Private Lempke killed the German and took his weapon. Continuing his advance he observed another German and shot him with the machine pistol. Skillfully maneuvering toward the beleaguered squad, he located and killed three more enemy soldiers, to clear all enemy resistance from the rear and right rear of the squad. Finally reaching the three remaining members of the squad, he led them safely to the company. The initiative and aggressive fighting spirit displayed by Private Lempke prevented the capture of three fellow soldiers.
