MACK, DAVID
Citation:
The President of the United States takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to David Mack, Technician Fourth Grade, U.S. Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving as a Medical Aidman, in action against enemy forces from 17 June to 12 July 1944, at Saipan. During the period this unit was engaged with the enemy, Technician Mack, with complete disregard for personal safety and at the risk of his life, left covered positions in numerous instances, crossed open terrain under heavy enemy fire, and succeeded in administering first aid and evacuating casualties under tremendously hazardous conditions, frequently covering the victim's withdrawal with small arms fire until the wounded man reached safety. Often going to the aid of a casualty in the dark of the night, he constantly braved the danger of being hit by our own or enemy fire. On reaching the injured man he would protect him with his own body while caring for the wounds. During the entire Saipan operation the actions of Technician Fourth Grade Mack were of almost incredible bravery. His devoted care to the men of the unit to which he was attached was far beyond the call of duty; his daring was a byword and his example an inspiration to all with whom he came in contact. Technician Fourth Grade Mack's intrepid actions, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.

During the final assault on an enemy held hill, Private First Class Madokoro advanced ahead of his squad to a strategic position from which he could deliver effective automatic rifle fire. Partly exposed to enemy fire, he scanned his sector of the slope for targets. He leveled his automatic rifle on a nest of snipers, forcing them to disperse. Throughout the bitter fight he held his position, neutralizing another enemy nest and pinning down the enemy to enable his platoon to take the hill. Again at Luciana, Italy, Private First Class Madokoro occupied an advanced position and proceeded to fire on the enemy entrenched on the outskirts of the town. With heavy fire directed at him, he stubbornly held his position and provided covering fire when his squad was forced to withdraw because of a concentrated artillery and mortar barrage. The following day, when his squad became separated from the remainder of the company within the town, Private First Class Madokoro provided flank protection against determined enemy attacks. A group of enemy soldiers entered a nearby draw and threw hand grenades into the enemy position. On another occasion he left his position and silenced a machine pistol position with a grenade. Still later in the course of the battle, he approached an enemy machine gun nest and silenced it by firing from a kneeling position. By his stubborn determination, conspicuous devotion to duty and courage, Private First Class Madokoro inspired his squad in preventing the enemy's escape while his company closed in to occupy the town. Private First Class Madokoro's intrepid actions, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 34th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.

MAND, ALOIS J.
Citation:
The President of the United States takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Alois J. Mand, Sergeant, U.S. Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy, in action against enemy forces on 30 April 1945, at Okinawa, Ryukyu Islands. While his platoon was preparing to advance, the enemy launched a desperate counterattack, the brunt of which fell upon the attached machine gun section, of which Sergeant Mand was a squad leader. During the action the section leader was killed, a gunner and assistant gunner were wounded and one of the machine guns was put out of action by enemy fire. The rifle platoon leader and a majority of his riflemen also became casualties. Sergeant Mand, although himself wounded, realized the seriousness of the situation and immediately assumed command. Unaided, he attempted to place effective fire on the enemy with the one remaining machine gun, but was denied its use by murderous enemy mortar, machine gun, and rifle fire. The Japanese tried to destroy his machine gun infiltrating the position but Sergeant Mand, through his alert action, killed the eight enemy infiltrators with carbine fire. After firing all of his carbine ammunition, Sergeant Mand recovered a B.A.R. from a wounded comrade and fought the enemy until the B.A.R. jammed. Suddenly an enemy light machine gun opened up from a position 50 yards to the front of his position. Sergeant Mand then reorganized the remainder of the section and with the few remaining riflemen continued to hold off the foe while the wounded were being evacuated and until a support platoon arrived to help secure the hill. This outstanding display of individual courage and devotion to duty on the part of Sergeant Mand was in a large part instrumental in stopping a strong enemy counterattack. His personal valor and determination, and zealous devotion to duty, exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
