THE
DISTINGUISHED SERVICE CROSS
to
MEADE, ROBERT H.
Citation:
The President of the United States takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Robert H. Meade, Captain (Infantry), U.S. Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Company I, 253d Infantry Regiment, in action against enemy forces on 8 April 1945, near Zuttlingen, Germany. When his company was unable to enter the town because of heavy enemy machine gun activity, Captain Meade, armed with an M- 1 rifle, moved out alone toward the objective. His daring attack resulted in the capture of fourteen SS men and completely unnerved the strongly entrenched enemy. Advancing through the town under sniper fire, he located the mayor and then forced more than one hundred hostile civilians to cease resistance. Captain Meade's courageous action achieved, single-handedly, the surrender of the town. His outstanding initiative and gallantry exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.

MERRILL, BOBBIE L.
Citation:
The President of the United States takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Bobbie L. Merrill, Private First Class, U.S. Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Company D, 305th Infantry Regiment, 77th Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces on 27 March 1945, near Asa, Zamami Shima, Ryukyu Islands. Private Merrill was first gunner of a machine gun protecting the left flank of the defensive area where the unit was dug in on a ridge above the town of Asa, Zamami Shima, Ryukyu Islands. At 0200 the enemy opened up an intensive mortar and grenade barrage and then attacked in force. Bearing the brunt of the concentrated assault, Private Merrill and his comrades delivered deadly fire from two machine guns, and succeeded in repulsing the enemy advance. Although painfully wounded in the arm and face by grenade fragments, he refused to withdraw to the medical aid station, and remained at his post, fighting off two more fanatical attacks which reached the gun positions. Wounded in the leg in the violent hand-to-hand combat which ensued he continued to beat off the frenzied attackers. When with mounting intensity the enemy attacked for the third time, he emptied his pistol into the charging forces, and grasping an entrenching tool, attacked and killed a Japanese officer. Seizing the dead man's saber, he turned upon another enemy officer and engaged him in a violent duel, finally killing him. With unflagging determination he pressed the fight, and charged the remaining enemy, who turned and fled in terror. 27 Japanese dead were counted the next morning in and around the machine gun position which he and his comrades had held so valiantly. Through his aggressive fighting spirit and indomitable will to destroy the enemy, Private Merrill played an important part in preventing a disastrous breakthrough of the company defense, and set an inspiring example of bravery to all members of the command. His intrepid actions, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 77th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.

At great personal risk, he fired a rocket, scored a direct hit and completely destroyed the tank. Suffering painful burns and temporarily blinded by the flash of an exploding projectile, he crawled back to a covered position. Meanwhile, the Germans infiltrated to within a few feet of him, mounted a machine gun and fired upon his comrades nearby. Unable to see the weapon, he determined its location by sound and, with complete disregard for his own safety, hurled a hand grenade which silenced the gun and killed the entire crew. Suffering excruciating pain, he staggered through intense enemy fire to rejoin his squad. By his heroic achievement, fearless courage and unflinching devotion to duty, Private Michin exemplified the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflected great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.

With utter disregard for his personal safety, he left his foxhole, and standing in the open, hurled grenades, dispersing the hostile attack. MILOSEVICH, RISTO (POW)
Citation:
The President of the United States takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Risto Milosevich, Sergeant [then Private First Class], U.S. Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Intelligence and Reconnaissance Platoon, Headquarters Company, 394th Infantry Regiment, 99th Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces on 16 December 1944, in the vicinity of Lanzerath, Belgium. Following a relentless early morning artillery barrage, Sergeant Milosevich sighted two columns of German paratroopers marching on the road through Lanzerath about 200 yards from the platoon's position. When the German unit launched an attack, Sergeant Milosevich boldly and single-handedly manned a .30 caliber light machine gun. Simultaneously feeding the belt and operating the machine gun, he placed voluminous automatic weapons fire on the Germans who were concentrating their assault to the front and right of his assigned defensive sector. During this assault, he spotted and cut down an enemy soldier attempting to throw a grenade inside the defensive perimeter. When his machine gun jammed, he continued to suppress the attack with remarkably rapid and accurate fire from his individual weapon. Joined by his platoon sergeant as another attack began, Sergeant Milosevich fed the belt to a machine gun until it burned out. He then began removing ammunition from the useless machine gun belts for use in his rifle so that he could continue to repel the enemy soldiers who outnumbered the platoon fifteen-to-one. Sergeant Milosevich's dauntless efforts and sustained weapons fire throughout the day contributed immensely to the platoon's ability to stop three separate frontal attacks. Finally, hopelessly outnumbered and out of ammunition, he was overwhelmed and forcefully captured in his foxhole by the enemy. Sergeant Milosevich's extraordinary heroism and refusal to surrender despite insurmountable odds were responsible for inflicting heavy casualties on the attacking enemy forces and delaying their advance for nearly 18 hours. Sergeant Milosevich's intrepid actions, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 99th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.

When the enemy hurled an attack of 30 to 40 tanks against the recently established beachhead, First Lieutenant Milotta, together with several other officers and men became separated by this attack. Lieutenant Milotta then left his concealed position and made his way over hundreds of yards of heavily shelled terrain in the path of the approaching tanks to reach an abandoned anti-tank gun. Lieutenant Milotta engaged the enemy armor at almost point-blank range and continued to fire even after the tanks had encircled his position. He remained at his position until two of his companions were seriously wounded, and at further risk to his life evacuated these men. Through his extraordinary heroism and high devotion to duty in the face of such great odds, First Lieutenant Milotta materially contributed to the eventual defeat of the enemy and his intrepid actions, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 1st Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
