SAVINO, FRANK A.
Citation:
The President of the United States takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Frank A. Savino (36712545), Technician Fourth Grade, U.S. Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with the 715th Amphibian Tractor Battalion, 77th Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces on 10 June 1945, at Okinawa, Ryukyu Islands. During the operations which culminated in the clearing of Japanese forces from Okinawa, Ryukyu Islands, the 715th Amphibian Tractor Battalion was hauling ammunition by amphibian tractor to the Seventh Marine Regiment when enemy artillery disabled one of the vehicles on a reef just off shore. Technician Savino, a Radio Operator, volunteered with three other men to use another tractor in an attempt to salvage the vehicle and its cargo of urgently needed ammunition. Reaching the reef, the group had descended from the amphibian tractor when the entire area was covered by a severe artillery barrage which wounded all four men. Seeing that one of his comrades had been too seriously wounded to walk, Technician Savino, although painfully injured himself, refused to take cover and ran through the enemy concentration to the aid of the disabled soldier. Taking the wounded man in his arms, he had carried him about 10 yards when an artillery projectile landed a few yards away and exploded, killing his comrade, knocking Technician Savino to the ground, breaking his arm, and severely lacerating his face and body. Realizing the only chance of saving his own life and those of his companions was to leave the reef as soon as possible, he made his way to the tractor, climbed into the cab, and had the engine running by the time his wounded comrades reached the vehicle. Then, despite his increasingly weakened condition, he courageously drove the tractor 800 yards to the beach where he collapsed. Through gallant initiative, resourcefulness, and unremitting devotion to duty, Technician Fourth Grade Savino rescued two wounded comrades. His intrepid actions, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 77th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.

The men were unable to move because of the open terrain and the fierceness of the enemy fire. Technical Sergeant Sawyer demonstrated the highest type of leadership in coolly estimating the situation and quickly taking action against the obstacle in the pat of the advance. He charged headlong at the enemy emplacement with both rifle and bayonet. He was shot while attacking the enemy position, and continued to draw enemy fire, but his great courage carried him on. Technical Sergeant Sawyer killed 3 enemy soldiers in the hostile position and three more were forced to surrender. Technical Sergeant Sawyer was in the act of directing his prisoners when one of them, having concealed a grenade in his hand, threw it killing Technical Sergeant Sawyer instantly. Schallmoser (36645880), Private First Class, U.S. Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Company I, 413th Infantry Regiment, 104th Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces on the night of 23 March 1945, near Kottingen, Germany. In the face of fierce enemy resistance from well-prepared positions on wooded and commanding terrain, Private First Class Schallmoser made his way back approximately 1300 yards to Stockhousen, Germany, fearlessly disregarding the overwhelming storm of enemy artillery, mortar, panzerfaust, and machine gun fire in order to secure tank support for his company. Private First Class Schallmoser then alone rode a tank over the same perilous route, guiding it to his company commander's position. Fire from the tank succeeded in reducing the enemy panzerfaust and small arms fire enough to enable the company to resume the advance. When the platoon commander became a casualty, Private First Class Schallmoser assumed command of the group and with undaunting courage in the face of withering enemy fire, rushed forward shouting commands and exhorting his comrades in the most spirited manner. Under this skillful and extraordinarily aggressive leadership, the enemy was completely routed, and the woods cleared without a casualty. The brilliant leadership, aggressiveness and intrepid gallantry of Private First Class Schallmoser enabled the company to take the town of Kottingen with the fewest possible casualties. His self-assigned actions far above and beyond the normal call of duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 104th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.

Although fully aware of the extreme danger involved, he courageously volunteered to assist in the attempt to take the casualties through the dangerous blockade and deliver them to a hospital. The muddy, winding road necessitated a slow rate of speed, and, as the ambulance approached a roadblock, Japanese heavy machine gun opened fire. Fearlessly moving forward in the face of the deadly barrage, Private Schenck continued driving until he was seriously wounded. Although the motor was disabled, his companion quickly took his place and rolled the bullet-riddled vehicle down the hill to safety. By his great personal courage and gallantry in voluntarily risking his own life to save the lives of three critically wounded fellow soldiers, Private First Class Schenck set an inspiring example of heroism worthy of the highest traditions of the United States Medical Service, reflecting great credit upon himself, the 28th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.

The President of the United States takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Max F. Schneider (0-384849), Lieutenant Colonel (Infantry), U.S. Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving as Commanding Officer of the 5th Ranger Infantry Battalion, in action against enemy forces on 6 June 1944, at Normandy, France. In the initial landings in the invasion of France, Lieutenant Colonel Schneider led the 5th Ranger Infantry Battalion ashore at "H" hour on D-Day in the face of extremely heavy enemy rifle, machine gun, mortar, artillery and rocket fire. Upon reaching the beach Lieutenant Colonel Schneider reorganized his unit. During this reorganization, he repeatedly exposed himself to enemy fire. He then led his battalion in the assault on the enemy beach positions, and having accomplished this mission led them up a steep incline to assault the enemy gun emplacements on the top of the hill. The destruction of these enemy positions opened one of the vital beach exits, thereby permitting the troops and equipment which had been pinned down to move inland from the beach, with the result that reinforcements could be landed from the sea. The President of the United States takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to George W. Schultz, Jr., Technician Fifth Grade, U.S. Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with the 33d Armored Engineer Battalion, 7th Armored Division, in action against enemy forces on 31 October 1944, in occupied Holland. On that date, Technician Schultz and a fellow soldier were designated the task of setting demolition charges on a strategic bridge in enemy held territory in Holland. It was necessary to by-pass enemy road blocks, gun emplacements and fox holes. As they moved forward, the enemy opened fire with small arms and light machine guns. Leaving his fellow soldier behind, Technician Schultz crawled forward alone with forty-eight pounds of explosive. Despite the known dangers of the situation and with complete disregard for his own personal safety, Technician Schultz reached the bridge, attached the demolition charge, set the time fuse and worked his way back to friendly lines. The successful completion of Technician Schultz's daring action seriously hampered enemy action. The extraordinary heroism and courageous actions of Technician Schultz exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 7th Armored Division, and the United States Army.
