Rank and Organization: Sergeant, Company H, 106th Illinois Infantry. Place and Date: Near Jackson, Tenn., 23 December 1862. Entered Service At: Lincoln, Ill. Birth: Germany. Date of Issue: 16 May 1899.

Citation:

When his command was surrounded by a greatly superior force, voluntarily left the shelter of the breastworks, crossed an open railway trestle under a concentrated fire from the enemy, made his way out and secured reinforcements for the relief of his command.
