  • During World War II one Medal of Honor was awarded for action on the ground in Alaska.  The posthumous award to Colorado's Joseph P. Martinez was the only Medal of Honor for World War II heroism on American soil outside of Hawaii.

"For Conspicuous Gallantry and Intrepidity in Action At the Risk of Life Above and Beyond the Call of Duty"
